This is the Social Good Brazil program:

We believe that technology is a powerful means to promote the solution for social problems. The network is made up of people whose day-to-day small actions combine and result in huge transformations in society.

We are connected with incredible people and organizations that also believe in this and are making the difference. Together we can make change happen, and that’s why we created Social Good Brazil (SGB)!

Social Good is a term of the digital culture that means using the power of technology, social media and innovative thinking to make the world a better place.

The Social Good Program has three main goals: disseminate the concept of Social Good, inspire organizations and individuals to engage; promote opportunities for interaction and gather information and tools on how to use technology and innovative thinking to contribute to solve social problems; and identify and support innovative ideas in order to increase the number of successful Social Good cases in Brazil, as well as expand their potential of social impact.

We are using three strategies to get to these goals:

  • Biannual seminars (in Florianópolis and São Paulo) to inspire the public with what is happening in the area and promote reflection and action.
  • Website and the use of social media to disseminate the concept of Social Good and to inform people inspiring them to act.
  • Social Good Brazil Lab, a laboratory to design and prototype social good initiatives (to be launched in 2013).

Social Good Brazil 2013

In 2013 the Social Good Brazil Program presents 03 main projects:

- The Social Good Summit Meetup – Brazil, which will take place together with the Social Good Summit in NYC

- Launch of a new online platform which is multimedia, more interactive, collaborative and able to offer more opportunities of engagement in Social Good initiatives.

- Launch of the Social Good LAB, a laboratory that will test and prototype ideas with potential of high social impact. The LAB will use methods such as Design-Thinking and Lean Startup.

History of Social Good Brazil

The program was created in partnership by the volunteer center Instituto Voluntários em Ação (IVA) who manages a web platform for online and offline volunteering (voluntariosonline.org), and by Instituto Comunitário Grande Florianópolis (ICom) the community foundation for Florianópolis and neighbouring cities.

In 2010 ICom and IVA promoted a first seminar in Florianópolis (called “Together is Better – TiB) to discuss the use of technology for social change, gathering important actors of the social field and of communication.

In September 2011, IVA and ICom participated in the Social Good Summit in New York, a summit that gathers speakers from all over the world to exchange ideas on the use of technology to deal with global challenges. Inspired by the NY summit, IVA and ICom put together the Social Good Brazil Program.

The legacy

Aaron Sherinian (UN Foundation) wrote an inpiring post about the seminar: “The inaugural Social Good Brazil was an important event.  It didn’t take place in the capital, or in São Paulo, or in Rio.  It was in Florianópolis, a bustling city whose tech community is pushing the country to do great things”.
